Facing an Empty Nest
My husband and I have three children and decided what feels like eons ago that I would be a stay-at-home mom. I totally threw myself into taking care of my little ones – cooking homemade baby food; signing up for Mommy and Me classes; going to the playground… well you get the picture. But when the last one got on the bus to go to kindergarten, I knew I needed more. I was facing an empty nest.
Volunteering and Part-Time Jobs
Like many moms, I volunteered my time and talents to lots of different causes associated with my children. I also held a few part-time jobs – direct sales manager, office management consultant and administrative assistant at a web store. I loved the fact that I was able to do things that I loved while keeping the flexibility to raise our family. In each situation, the common thread was the computer. Whether I was creating brochures or updating a website, I loved this aspect of my work.
It was the position as an administrative assistant at the web store (year 2008ish), however, where I really caught the Internet bug. It reconnected me to my techie side from my BC (before children) job. I was thrilled to find something that fit with my family and still gave me the opportunity to use my passion and skills. I loved it. Unfortunately, I was laid off from this job during the recession and needed to find something else. I wanted to find something that still allowed me to use my skills and talents BUT where I was in control.
Going Back to School
So, I decided to go back to school. In 2010 I earned a Certificate of Website Development and in 2011 I launched my own business, msf web design, llc. I thought I was on my way.
Well….not so much. I found out there is STILL a lot to learn. In fact, all the information felt like I was trying to take a sip of water from a fire hose. At times, I felt like I was drowning in information overload. BUT, call me crazy because I truly have a love of learning.
SO I persevered watching lots of tutorials, taking classes and experiencing a lot of trials and errors. And eventually I began to figure it out.
My business looks very different today than when I first hung out my shingle in 2011. Now, I enjoy helping others through their own journey of building an online business.
My husband and I are thrilled with the nest egg I have created and plan to use it when he retires. Since I created a portable business, we plan on taking it on the road where we will eventually tour the United States.
